Planning an RV trip from Nashville to the Great Smoky Mountains? You’re in for a treat—rolling hills, winding rivers, and scenic overlooks await as you journey approximately 250 miles through Tennessee’s most picturesque routes. This guide covers three top RV-friendly paths, campground recommendations, pit stops, and tips to make your Smoky Mountains adventure unforgettable.
Route 1: I-40 East → US-321 → Gatlinburg
This is the most direct and popular route, ideal for drivers who prefer well-maintained highways and established RV stops along the way.
Step-by-Step Directions
- From Nashville, merge onto I-40 East toward Knoxville (approx. 210 miles to exit 407).
- Take exit 407 for US-321 South toward Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge (approx. 18 miles).
- Follow US-321 into Gatlinburg—continue to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance at Newfound Gap Road.
Highlights & Stops
- Cookeville, TN: Midpoint stop for fuel, groceries, and quick local eats—visit dogwood parks for a leg stretch.
- Crossville, TN: Known as the “Golf Capital of Tennessee,” with RV parks like Crossville KOA and Lake Tansi Village.
- Sevierville & Pigeon Forge: Perfect for family attractions—Dollywood, dinner theaters, or a quick pit stop at local diners.
- Gatlinburg: Gateway to the Smokies—consider staying at Smoky Bear Campground or Greenbrier Campground for easy access to park trails.
Route 2: I-65 South → I-840 East → I-40 East → US-321
If you want to avoid central Knoxville traffic and enjoy a slightly more relaxed highway experience, this route adds I-840—a scenic bypass around Nashville’s southern suburbs.
Step-by-Step Directions
- From Nashville, take I-65 South toward Columbia (approx. 30 miles).
- Merge onto I-840 East (Outer Loop) toward Murfreesboro/Lynchburg (approx. 50 miles).
- Merge onto I-40 East at exit 63 (approx. 110 miles to exit 407 for US-321 South).
- Continue on US-321 South into Gatlinburg (approx. 18 miles).
Highlights & Stops
- Murfreesboro, TN: Historic downtown, RV parks like Barfield Crescent Park (lush, wooded sites).
- Lynchburg, TN: Home of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery—shuttle tours available (note traffic restrictions for RVs during peak tour hours).
- Crossville, TN: Same as Route 1—great RV amenities at local resorts and campgrounds.
- Sevierville & Pigeon Forge: Group-friendly RV parks like River Plantation RV Resort—several pull-through sites and resort amenities.
Route 3: US-321 North → Townsend → Cades Cove
For a more leisurely, scenic drive—especially if you’re eager to experience less-traveled park roads—consider heading to Townsend via US-321 and looping through Cades Cove.
Step-by-Step Directions
- Depart Nashville via I-40 East toward Knoxville (approx. 200 miles to exit 432 for US-321 North).
- Take exit 432 onto US-321 North toward Cosby (approx. 26 miles to Townsend).
- In Townsend, take Laurel Creek Road to access the Cades Cove Loop (Cades Cove Road) inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Highlights & Stops
- Cosby, TN: Rural setting with access to Cosby Campground (smaller, wooded, and less crowded).
- Townsend, TN: Known as the ‘Peaceful Side of the Smokies’—check out Townsend RV Park or Cades Cove Campground for pull-through sites.
- Cades Cove Loop Road: A one-way, 11-mile scenic loop featuring wildlife viewing, historic cabins, churches, and auto tour stops. Park your RV at designated pull-offs to explore on foot or bike.
- Elkmont Road: Follow US-321 from Townsend back toward Gatlinburg for hiking trailheads like Little River Trail or Alum Cave Bluffs.
Campground Recommendations
1. Smoky Bear Campground (Gatlinburg)
- Full Hookups (50/30/20 Amp) and pull-through sites.
- Shuffleboard, playground, and laundry facilities.
- Close to Gatlinburg’s downtown—shops, restaurants, and attractions.
Ideal if you want easy access to both park trails and town amenities. Book early—this campground fills quickly during spring and fall foliage.
2. Cades Cove Campground (Inside GSMNP)
- Semi Hookups and primitive tent-only sites (note: RVs can stay in designated sites but no hookups available).
- Access to the 11-mile Cades Cove Loop Road and trailheads for Abrams Falls and Cades Cove backcountry campsites.
- Wildlife viewing—white-tailed deer, black bears (from a safe distance), turkeys.
Perfect for RVers who want seclusion and morning wildlife sightings. Limited cell service and no hookups—but the serene setting is worth it.
3. River Plantation RV Resort (Sevierville)
- Full Hookups (50/30/20 Amp), pull-through and back-in sites.
- Resort-style amenities—heated pool, playground, and activity center.
- Easy access to I-40 and just 10 miles from Gatlinburg.
Great if you prefer resort comforts and plan to shuttle into Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. It’s also a good launch point for a day trip to Cades Cove via US-321.
Essential Travel Tips & Tricks
Planning Around Traffic & Events
- Fall Foliage (Late October–Early November): Roads—especially Cades Cove Loop and Newfound Gap Road—can get busy. Plan to drive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid peak traffic.
- Weekend Crowds: College football season and Dollywood events increase traffic on I-40 and surrounding routes. Consider traveling on weekdays or booking campgrounds a week in advance.
Packing & RV Prep
- Check Brake Controllers & Mirrors: Mountain roads require smooth braking and clear visibility—test your systems before departure.
- Leveling Blocks: Cades Cove Campground and Cosby Campground have uneven terrain—carry sturdy leveling blocks to stabilize your RV.
- Weather Gear: Nighttime temperatures can dip below 40°F, even in summer—pack jackets and thermal bedding.
- Fuel Stops: Fill up before Cosby or Townsend; fuel stations are scarce inside park boundaries.
Hiking Safety & Trailhead Etiquette
- Bear Aware: Carry bear spray in a secure holster; make noise on narrow trails to avoid surprising wildlife.
- Trailhead Parking: Cades Cove Loop Road has limited parking—arrive before 9 AM for Abrams Falls Trail or explore midweek.
- Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash—even food scraps—to minimize wildlife encounters and preserve natural beauty.

Special thanks to Beau for the great attention and help throughout our visit. Highly recommend!

The staff, specifically Bo, were ready on standby for any questions or hiccups we encountered with the RV during our trip, and his kindness extended thru to the exact moment we returned the RV. These people genuinely want you to have the best time you can in their vehicles. Highly recommended!

We give him 5+ stars!

Finance guy, Brian is a pleasure to work with. He cuts to the chase and doesn’t try to sell you more than you need!
Serviceman, Nate is simply the best!
Everyone else that we came into contact with during our visits to Nashville RV are super friendly!
Overall, great experience from start to finish…except the heat! 🙃
It has already been dog approved!

Thank you, Tim & Sheri from Wyoming

Garrett was very thorough when explaining the ins and outs of the RV and how to make sure all fours tires stay in contact with roads.
Would definitely recommend going through Garrett if you are considering renting an RV.

He was patient and understanding while we fumbled through the process, but ultimately was a professional about the whole experience. Bottom line, I wanna party with this guy…. And rent my RV’s from him

We highly recommend Nashville RV, and plan to use them again in the future.

Unit was clean, gassed up, tanks filled, ready to go. All required cords, hoses, etc were provided. Everything worked well and well maintained. Great rental experience. Thanks!

Sales Rep meets me on parking area. Calls a service representative from their other building. He begins to check it out. Another service rep joins him. Diagnose the problem. Gets us on the road. AND won't take a dime for jacking our right rear jack back up fully to the necessary place. Week retraction springs.
Highly recommend for their friendly fast knowledgeable service.

we pulled into this business, a service representative immediately came to our motorhome to find out our needs. Eventually there were three servicemen working to get us back on the road. EXTREMELY friendly and knowledgeable. Thank you. I would highly recommend Nashville RV in
Franklin.

The motor home was outfitted with everything we could have possibly needed. Easy to drive. Easy to set up. Highly recommended!
Garrett & Brad showed us everything we needed to know. Checking Out & Checking In took no time at all. The team had everything waiting for us with levels all topped off and full instructions on use. We had 24/7 access to a technician if needed. OUTSTANDING!!

Garrett and Brad were outstanding during the entire process from sharing options for rentals and prices, demonstrating the use of the vehicles, and following up on the overall experience.
My family and I were thrilled to make fun-filled memories using Nashville RV Rentals!

Highly recommend them, and renting an RV first if you’re considering ownership, especially if you’re newbies like we were. It really helps to show what you like and dislike so you can make a decision that’s right for you.
Brad and Garrett were awesome - go see them before you go on your RV Adventure!

Motivates me to run my business better!
RV’s were competitively priced too and basically brand new.
Look no further.

Even went home and returned with the wife to look around. No pressure and no sales pitches. We will definitely be back.

Also, Brad in the rental department is just as courteous and easy to deal with!
I won't be going anywhere else for a camper from here on.

They even have folks that will set up your rig at the campsite. We've used them close to a dozen times. They have earned our continued business. Wish I could give them six stars. Make sure you talk to them before you rent anywhere else.
I highly recommend phoning them if you are considering an RV trip!

They went over everything needed (and more) for our smokey mountain long weekend. All was easy from pick up to drop off. They actually answer phone during off hours! Huge plus on service. We'll be back for sure!

There is a reason they continue to have rave reviews online.
Thanks again and happy RVing!

For any other first-timers: the orientation is adequate, but brief. I'd encourage you to view YouTube tutorials as well before showing up for your rental and/or just filming the key parts of the orientation, as the manual is pretty slim. But, assuming those precautions, Nashville RV is a full-service, one-stop shop to get you safely on the open road--especially first-timers.

Garrett was very helpful and was even able to get us a one day extension to enjoy our trip. This place is top notch. We will definitely be back for our next RV rental. A heads up that this place is a little more expensive than somewhere like Cruise America but I feel like you get better service, a better RV and better coverage so it is worth it.
