One way RV rentals in Tennessee offer flexibility for travelers who want to explore without returning to the starting point. Whether you’re planning a cross-state road trip, relocating, or simply craving a change of scenery, it’s important to weigh the advantages and disadvantages before booking. Below, discover the key pros and cons of opting for a one way RV rental in Tennessee, plus tips for making your journey smooth and cost-effective.
Pros of One Way RV Rentals
1. Flexible Itineraries
- You can plan a route that starts in Nashville and ends in Knoxville, Chattanooga, or Memphis—no need to loop back to your original pickup city.
- Allows you to maximize sightseeing in multiple regions without doubling back. For example, travel from Nashville to the Smokies, then end in Knoxville for onward travel.
2. Saves Time & Fuel
- No return loop means fewer miles driven, which translates to lower fuel costs. Ideal if you prefer a point-to-point journey, such as from Nashville to Gatlinburg.
- Reduces wear and tear on both the RV and your tow vehicle—especially beneficial if you plan to head south for winter visits around Memphis or the Mississippi Delta.
3. Variety of Pick-Up & Drop-Off Locations
- Major cities like Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville often have multiple rental locations. You can start in Music City and end near Chattanooga’s riverfront without backtracking.
- Some rental companies partner with relocation services—offering discounted one way rates when they need to position RVs in different Tennessee branches.
4. Enhanced Travel Experiences
- Explore urban attractions (Broadway in Nashville) before transitioning into natural wonders (Great Smoky Mountains), then wind up with blues music in Memphis—each leg introduces a new vibe.
- Creates a sense of adventure and discovery, as you’re not tied to returning to the same campground. Check out our guide on how to choose campgrounds along the way.
Cons of One Way RV Rentals
1. Higher Rental Fees
- One way rates usually include a drop-off fee to cover the cost of returning the RV to its original location—this can add $200–$500 to your total.
- Limited availability during peak seasons—summer in Tennessee or fall foliage months—may drive fees even higher if additional logistical arrangements are required.
2. Limited Vehicle Options
- Not every RV in the fleet is available for one way trips. You may find fewer floor plans or model years to choose from compared to standard round-trip rentals.
- Popular models like Class C motorhomes or toy haulers may sell out quickly for one way routes, especially if you need a specific drop-off city like Memphis or Knoxville.
3. Drop-Off Location Restrictions
- Some rural or small-town branches do not accept one way returns. For instance, a Chattanooga branch might not accept an RV dropped off from Nashville if they lack personnel to handle incoming units.
- Drop-off hours can be limited—returning outside business hours may incur extra “after-hours” fees or require coordination for secure parking.
4. Planning Complexity
- You’ll need to coordinate campground reservations at both the pickup area (e.g., near Nashville) and drop-off area (e.g., near Memphis). If plans change, rebooking both locations can be stressful.
- Relocation of personal belongings: If you plan to leave any gear in the RV after drop-off, verify storage policies since some branches clear out units immediately.
Tips to Mitigate Drawbacks
1. Book Early & Compare Rates
- Reserve as far in advance as possible—especially during peak months (June–August, October–November). Early bookings often lock in lower one way fees and better model availability.
- Compare multiple rental providers (Nashville RV Rentals, Camp South RV, Music City RV) to find competitive drop-off fees. Check their long-term rates if you’re extending beyond one week.
2. Optimize Your Route
- Plan logical routes that minimize deadhead mileage (miles driven without passengers). For example, pick up in Nashville, pass through Knoxville, then drop off in Chattanooga—three major branches on Interstate 40 and I-75.
- Factor in campground availability and seasonal weather. If traveling from Nashville to the Smokies, drop off in Knoxville to avoid congested Smoky Mountain traffic on the final leg.
3. Clarify Drop-Off Procedures
- Ask about after-hours drop-off. Some branches provide secure lots and key drop boxes to avoid late-fee penalties.
- Confirm that your RV model can be left at your chosen drop-off location—verify branch staffing and storage capacity, especially in smaller Tennessee towns like Jackson or Cookeville.
4. Leverage Special Promotions
- Some companies offer “free one way” promotions if the return location is near a major distribution center. Sign up for newsletters or check the rental company’s relocation deals.
- Consider relocating during weekdays when one way availability is higher—weekend drop-offs often fill quickly and incur premium fees.

Special thanks to Beau for the great attention and help throughout our visit. Highly recommend!

The staff, specifically Bo, were ready on standby for any questions or hiccups we encountered with the RV during our trip, and his kindness extended thru to the exact moment we returned the RV. These people genuinely want you to have the best time you can in their vehicles. Highly recommended!

We give him 5+ stars!

Finance guy, Brian is a pleasure to work with. He cuts to the chase and doesn’t try to sell you more than you need!
Serviceman, Nate is simply the best!
Everyone else that we came into contact with during our visits to Nashville RV are super friendly!
Overall, great experience from start to finish…except the heat! 🙃
It has already been dog approved!

Thank you, Tim & Sheri from Wyoming

Garrett was very thorough when explaining the ins and outs of the RV and how to make sure all fours tires stay in contact with roads.
Would definitely recommend going through Garrett if you are considering renting an RV.

He was patient and understanding while we fumbled through the process, but ultimately was a professional about the whole experience. Bottom line, I wanna party with this guy…. And rent my RV’s from him

We highly recommend Nashville RV, and plan to use them again in the future.

Unit was clean, gassed up, tanks filled, ready to go. All required cords, hoses, etc were provided. Everything worked well and well maintained. Great rental experience. Thanks!

Sales Rep meets me on parking area. Calls a service representative from their other building. He begins to check it out. Another service rep joins him. Diagnose the problem. Gets us on the road. AND won't take a dime for jacking our right rear jack back up fully to the necessary place. Week retraction springs.
Highly recommend for their friendly fast knowledgeable service.

we pulled into this business, a service representative immediately came to our motorhome to find out our needs. Eventually there were three servicemen working to get us back on the road. EXTREMELY friendly and knowledgeable. Thank you. I would highly recommend Nashville RV in
Franklin.

The motor home was outfitted with everything we could have possibly needed. Easy to drive. Easy to set up. Highly recommended!
Garrett & Brad showed us everything we needed to know. Checking Out & Checking In took no time at all. The team had everything waiting for us with levels all topped off and full instructions on use. We had 24/7 access to a technician if needed. OUTSTANDING!!

Garrett and Brad were outstanding during the entire process from sharing options for rentals and prices, demonstrating the use of the vehicles, and following up on the overall experience.
My family and I were thrilled to make fun-filled memories using Nashville RV Rentals!

Highly recommend them, and renting an RV first if you’re considering ownership, especially if you’re newbies like we were. It really helps to show what you like and dislike so you can make a decision that’s right for you.
Brad and Garrett were awesome - go see them before you go on your RV Adventure!

Motivates me to run my business better!
RV’s were competitively priced too and basically brand new.
Look no further.

Even went home and returned with the wife to look around. No pressure and no sales pitches. We will definitely be back.

Also, Brad in the rental department is just as courteous and easy to deal with!
I won't be going anywhere else for a camper from here on.

They even have folks that will set up your rig at the campsite. We've used them close to a dozen times. They have earned our continued business. Wish I could give them six stars. Make sure you talk to them before you rent anywhere else.
I highly recommend phoning them if you are considering an RV trip!

They went over everything needed (and more) for our smokey mountain long weekend. All was easy from pick up to drop off. They actually answer phone during off hours! Huge plus on service. We'll be back for sure!

There is a reason they continue to have rave reviews online.
Thanks again and happy RVing!

For any other first-timers: the orientation is adequate, but brief. I'd encourage you to view YouTube tutorials as well before showing up for your rental and/or just filming the key parts of the orientation, as the manual is pretty slim. But, assuming those precautions, Nashville RV is a full-service, one-stop shop to get you safely on the open road--especially first-timers.

Garrett was very helpful and was even able to get us a one day extension to enjoy our trip. This place is top notch. We will definitely be back for our next RV rental. A heads up that this place is a little more expensive than somewhere like Cruise America but I feel like you get better service, a better RV and better coverage so it is worth it.
